What is your nervous system?

Your nervous system includes the:

  • Brain: master control system
  • Spinal cord: information super highway
  • Nerves: messengers giving and receiving information

Your brain is protected by your skull, and your spinal cord and exiting nerves are protected by your spinal vertebrae (bones).

How does your nervous system work?
  • Your nervous system receives sensory input from your sensory organs (eyes, ears, skin, etc.) regarding what is happening inside & outside your body.
  • This information is sent as electrochemical signals up your spinal cord and into your brain where it is processed and interpreted.
  • Your brain then creates an action in response to what was interpreted, and sends motor electrochemical signals back down your spinal cord and into the appropriate nerves to complete the action.
  • The motor action is then sensed and the cycle repeats.

This is the continuously evolving way in which your brain and body adapt to life and the constantly changing environment around you & within you.

Examples can be sweating in response to being overheated, or moving your eyes to read this page.

Are mental, emotional & physical linked?

Because your nervous system and brain are directly linked – all brain functions (learning, thought, memory and emotions) also have an impact on how your body functions. You tense when you’re angry, cry or hunch when you’re sad, and even look in specific directions when you’re accessing long term memory. This is also why concussions and strokes not only affect the part of the brain that received the damage, but also effects function in the corresponding area of the body the brain is responsible for.

Why nervous system focused chiropractic?

In an ideal world, all messages transmitting through your nervous system are free of interference so you can effortlessly adapt to life. Unfortunately, injury, inflammation, excess stress – whether trauma, toxins or thoughts – can distort, alter or stop these messages. This interference can create a negative feedback loop between the brain, spinal cord and nerves resulting in the inability to effectively adapt to life. Some potential symptoms of maladaptation within the nervous system are: pain, fatigue, headache, illness, hormone or digestive imbalance, brain fog, emotional dysregulation and altered movement patterns.

Altered spinal vertebrae movement patterns are what is most commonly associated with Chiropractic Care.

Symptoms beyond pain?

Pain is often the last symptom to show up and also the first symptom to go away. Other symptoms your body may express to show your nervous system is not functioning at its best are:

  • Neck & Shoulder Pain
  • Lower Back Pain & Sciatica
  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Vertigo
  • Jaw issues
  • Poor Posture
  • Numbness & Tingling
  • Difficulty Sleeping
  • Poor Digestion
  • Chronic Illness
  • Low Energy & Fatigue
  • Stress & Anxiety
  • Allergies & Congestion
  • Mood Swings

… and the list can go on, because your nervous system controls and coordinates everything that happens in your body.
